B. Rasterzellen).... view less

In demographic terms German small towns are a diverse settlement category. There are growing and shrinking small towns. Small towns are both the source and the destination of internal and international migration. There are towns with a comparatively young population and excess births, but also aging towns with high excess deaths. The article provides an overview of the state of research on natural population development and selective migration in the context of small towns, identifying methodological challenges and research gaps. Of particular importance is the lack of independent demographic research into small towns. Also desirable is more qualitative work, comparative case studies and regular detailed countrywide analyses of population development and structure on the municipal level or on another small-scale level of analysis (e.g. grid cells).... view less
