A two-wave panel study (N = 893) was conducted at four Swiss high schools. On the one hand, perceived prevalence and acceptance of tobacco use were found to be positively related to perceived substance use on Instagram. On the other hand, tobacco use itself could be explained by normative beliefs as well as by the production and sharing of related content on Snapchat. The article discusses the different roles of the platforms in terms of reception and production effects and the relevance of normative beliefs mediating media effects.... view less
