The office of mayor is the highest political post in local government in Germany, in which women are extremely under-represented. In 2017, the proportion of women mayors in the approx. 80 large cities (with more than 100,000 inhabitants) was 8%. Using a descriptive and bivariate analysis, the article investigates which factors are responsible for this. The analysis is based on a full survey of all candidates (N = 2,113) and parties in municipalities with more than 20,000 inhabitants (N = 665) on 31 October 2018. The relative electoral success of women and men is linked both to the parties’ nomination processes and other factors which were included in the analysis. The assumptions and results are discussed in the light of current research results.... view less
