This article makes the case for a distinctly sociological perspective on digitalization. Most recent sociological studies on digitalization, especially those from the sociology of work, tend to focus on the introduction of new technologies. Many currently relevant phenomena, however, present themselves in different ways that will go unnoticed if digitalization is only defined through technology. One such case is a practice lab on work 4.0, which will be discussed here as an example for how actors can shape the future of work and how that participation may be changing in the context of digitalization. Interestingly enough, technology itself is not the key to understanding this case; nor does it play a major role. After a brief introduction, this article presents and discusses the case of the practice lab, including some unique methodological issues and the organizational processes of the lab from the perspective of the worker representative groups, before getting to the heart of the matter, that is, the relationship between technology and digitalization.... view less
