Mit Tupperware untersucht der Beitrag ein von Frauen dominiertes Tätigkeitsfeld, dessen Bedeutung sich erst in der Rückschau erschließt: Hier finden sich in der Hochzeit des Fordismus gehäuft Merkmale, die heute als typisch postfordistisch gelten. Dazu gehören dezentrale Organisationsformen und eine subjektivierte Steuerung von Arbeit ebenso wie atypische Beschäftigungsverhältnisse. Während diese Erwerbsform zu den Strukturen der "Fordist Family" gut passte - auch deshalb, weil sie in materieller Hinsicht keine Existenz sichern sein musste -, verändert sich aktuell deren Funktion. Unter den Erwerbsarbeitsbedingungen des Marktkapitalismus wird die Arbeit bei Tupperware für die Frauen zunehmend zu einem "Brotjob" und geht mit höheren arbeitsbezogenen Belastungen einher, die etwa aus der Anforderung resultieren, Emotionsarbeit zu leisten.... view less

Taking Tupperware as its object, this article sets out to analyze an area of activity traditionally dominated by women, the characteristics of which have only been revealed in hindsight. Even in the golden age of Fordism, Tupperware sales were displaying features which are now regarded as post-Fordist. Among them are decentralized forms of organisation, subjectivized ways of controlling work, the commodification of personal attributes and atypical employment relationships. Whereas this kind of employment blended well with the structures of the "Fordist Family" (partly because it did not offer secure jobs), its function is now changing. Under the regime of market capitalism, working for Tupperware is increasingly becoming an economic necessity for the women concerned - and this, in turn, involves greater work-related strain.... view less
