Armut von Kindern drückt sich nicht nur in materiellem Mangel, sondern auch in einem begrenzten Zugang zu öffentlichen Ressourcen, in sozialer Ausgrenzung und in emotionalen Belastungen aus. Dynamiken von Inklusion und Exklusion gehören daher ebenso in eine Analyse von Kinderarmut einbezogen wie die Auswirkungen von Armutslagen auf die Handlungschancen von Kindern und auf deren weitere Entwicklung. Die Kinder selbst sind aktiv Handelnde, die eine Bandbreite an Strategien entwickelt haben, um mit materiellen Notlagen umzugehen. Im Rahmen einer qualitativen Studie in zwei österreichischen Gemeinden wurden die Sichtweisen der Kinder in den Mittelpunkt gestellt. Child poverty does not only show itself in material deprivation, but also in limited access to public resources, social exclusion and in emotional stress. Dynamics of social inclusion and exclusion have to be considered in analyses on child poverty as well as the consequences of a poverty situation on future options of children and their further development. Children should be seen as active agents, who have developed a broad scope of strategies to deal with material deprivation. In a qualitative study, conducted in two Austrian communities, the children's perceptions were put in focus.
