Charles GOODWIN gilt als einer der Pioniere der sozialen Interaktionsforschung. In seinem letzten Buch "Co-Operative Action" arrangiert er seine bisherigen Publikationen neu in Hinblick auf ein Konzept, das einen radical turn in anthropology zur Folge haben könnte, denn seine ko-operative Handlungskonzeption deckt nicht nur die Praktiken der Moment-für-Moment-Aushandlungen in Face-to-Face-Interaktionen ab. Sein Ansatz umfasst vielmehr auch Handlungen mit sogenannten abwesenden Vorgänger/innen, deren vorausgegangenes Tun in Form von hinterlassener Materialität oder Wissensbeständen Auswirkungen auf die Handlungen der Interagierenden im Hier und Jetzt hat. Indem er das Paradigma der Kopräsenz verlässt, wird es möglich, Situationen zu beschreiben, deren Teilnehmende unterschiedliche Anwesenheitsstatus (räumlich und zeitlich) innehaben.
