'Questions regarding electoral systems are still placed high on the political agendas. Particularly in the context of the third wave of democratization, many electoral reforms took place. However, fundamental changes also occurred in established democracies. Hence, the article's aim is to explore general tendencies in the development of electoral systems worldwide. It focuses on the analytical level of types of electoral systems. It highlights the various functional dimensions of electoral systems and tries to assess the performance of different types of electoral systems along these lines. On this basis, developments are traced by region. The author observes a certain trend towards combined electoral systems, which can be explained by their higher functional performance while other factors that determine the choice or the design of electoral systems are not neglected.'
