El artículo se divide en dos grandes apartados: el activismo en la política exterior que caracteriza al sexenio de José López Portillo y la multilateralización de dicha política exterior durante el gobierno de Miguel de la Madrid. The main purpose of this article Is to analyze the political events that shaped the Mexican foreign policy towards the Central American nations during a crucial period: 1979-1988. This text covers two important issues: the activist character of José López Portillo's foreign policy and later the multilateral actions taken by Miguel de la Madrid's government.
