El objetivo de este artículo es analizar el significado actual de la democracia a través de la prensa mexicana. Los principales temas tratados en el artículo se refieren al proceso de comunicación política, a la democracia tal como es enfocada en las noticias, al significado actual de la democracia y la victoria de la oposición y a los riesgos que enfrenta el desarrollo democrático en México. Las conclusiones demuestran que la información de prensa no es optimista con relación al desarrollo de la democracia en México. Pero estas conclusiones no son definitivas. Para optimizar el cambio democrático es necesario que el pueblo mexicano se proponga objetivos más ambiciosos que la simple alternancia en el poder. México será una nación democrática cuando su sociedad se decida a implementar una cultura democrática sobre la base de sus propias experiencias y valores. The purpose of this article is to analyse the meaning of present democracy through the Mexican press. The main topics in the article relaje of the process of political communication, to democracy as it is approached in the press, to the meaning of present democracy and the victory of the opposition, and the risks faced by the democratic development in México. The conclusions show that the press information is not optimistic with respect to the development of democracy in México. But these conclusions are not definitive. To best profit from democratic change it is necessary Mexican people aim at more ambitious objectives than plain political altemance. México will be a democratic nation when its society decides to im- plement a democratic culture on the basis of its own experiences and valúes.
