Este artículo analiza algunos de los problemas a los que se enfrenta el modelo democrático liberal ante la cuestión del multiculturalismo; tomando como referencia las exigencias de los pueblos indígenas mexicanos, especialmente las formuladas por el EZLN, se plantea la posibilidad de que la idea de "nación multicultural" pueda considerarse como un concepto normativo que permita comprender mejor los complejos procesos de reconocimiento cultural, político y social de las minorías étnicas. Esto implica replantear las relaciones entre el Estado mexicano y los pueblos indígenas y transformar la idea de identidad nacional. De ahí la urgencia de modificar el concepto actual de federalismo; se propone un "federalismo cultural" más cercano a una democracia republicana en la que la diversidad cultural debe reflejarse en el marco institucional de la vida política, tanto en el ámbito local como en el nacional.... view less

This paper analyzes some of the problems which faces the democratic liberal model opposite to the question of the multiculturalism; taking as a reference the demands of the indigenous Mexican peoples, specially those formulated by the EZLN, I defend the idea of "multicultural nation" to be considered as a descriptive and normative concept that should allow to understand better the complex processes of cultural, political and social recognition of the ethnic minorities. This implies restating the relations between the Mexican State and the indigenous peoples, transforming the idea of national identity, and modifying the current concept of federalism, towards a "cultural federalism", nearer to a republican democracy in which the cultural diversity must be reflected in the institutional frame of the political life at both, local and national level.... view less
