'The experience of what may be private and what public is relative to the utmost degree. Nevertheless, the fact of various possibilities of experience points to polar principles of experience. These can be labeled as 'accessability' and 'unaccessability'. In the life-world, individual consciousness (in its cognitive and emotional dimensions) is an ideal type of the principle of unaccessability. On the other hand, the total situation of an immediate gathering - in its frame-work of unrestricted face-to-face contact with an utmost of communication - is an ideal type of the principle of accessability. This reconstruction of the constitutive conditions of the private and the public contains cultural-sociological implications: On the one hand it reveals the ambiguity of the relationship between individual and culture, on the other hand it creates the basis of a formal typology of the socio-historical relativity of this relationship and especially a theory of the modern life course.'
