The autobiographical introduction shows Klaus J. Bade's path from his own early experiences with problems of migration and integration to the pioneer of migration and integration research and to the practitioner of applied migration research. In retrospect, many things that may appear to be linear developments have also been a succession of personal coincidences. The introduction describes stations and encounters on Bade's scientific path at German universities, Harvard University, Oxford University, as well as the Institutes for Advanced Study of the Netherlands Academy of Sciences and the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin. The introduction also provides methodological insights into the social-historical migration research, which is central to Bade’s scientific work.... weniger
