%X The shipping class of the "monitors" originated in the American Civil War. Until World War I and beyond, monitors were also widespread in numerous different European fleets and river flotillas. This article deals with the fighting on the Danube during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877/78 and the destruction of a Turkish river monitor by army artillery fire. It is based on a report by a Prussian artillery officer who was commanded to the Russian army as a military observer in order to gain military experience for the German army.
