Objective: To understand the perception of nurses of the Family Health Strategy about childcare, describing the actions taken during the nursing consultation. Methods: A qualitative study conducted in Imperatriz - MA, with 13 nurses through a semi-structured interview, which included: understanding of childcare, between March and May 2012. Results: Nurses perceive childcare with a focus on comprehensive evaluation and an emphasis on health promotion and disease prevention. Reported difficulties in the implementation of childcare, lack of compliance of the mothers and overload assignments and contributions as actions of health education, improvements in indicators of health care and social demands. Conclusion: Nurses understand child care and systematic monitoring / periodic child, however, the actual work process should be revised to improvements in health care of the child and the community.... view less
