The depictions of various forms of pre-mechanical bank-bound ship-drive in the article "Treideln - treilen - trekken - jagen - bomätschen" appearing in DSA 25 can be supplemented by two remarkable pictures. One is the 1682 painting "Aufziehender Sturm" (Gathering Storm) by Ludolf Backhuysen in the collection of the Staatliche Museum Schwerin, the other a previously unknown drawing in the Thuringian Staatsarchiv Gotha, presumably of the year 1688. The two pictures exhibit astonishing similarities.... weniger
