Objective: understanding the care for inmates under the viewpoint of nursing students. Method: this is a descriptive study of a qualitative approach, performed with 11 nursing students at the State University of Paraiba, in the period August-September 2013. For data collection it was applied an audio-recorded semistructured interview. Data were analyzed according to the technique of Content Analysis. Results: four categories were found: comprehensive care, social law, and care to inmates and gaps in academic nursing education. Conclusion: the care for prisoners to nursing students is understood as a professional and human obligation; however, this caring permeates difficulties such as fear, accented by myths, prejudices and stigmas, plus the deficit in academic training.... view less
