The paper primarily reports on inequality of pay on the micro- and the macro-level of the manufacturing sector in Vienna and Lower Austria at the high tide of industrialization. It arrives at the following conclusions: the size distribution of wages paid by factories was virtually the same as that of wages paid by crafts-shop; the size distributions of male and of female wages respectively did hardly overlap but the degree of inequality was the same within each sex group; the degree of inequality significantly varied between different manufacturing industries.... view less

Das Papier berichtet über die Ungleichheit der Bezahlung auf der Mikro- und der Makroebene des verarbeitenden Sektors in Wien und Niederösterreich auf dem Höhepunkt der Industrialisierung. Es kommt zu folgenden Ergebnissen: (1) Die Einkommensverteilung nach Umfang war bei den Fabriken praktisch die gleiche wie bei kleinen Handwerksbetrieben. (2) Die Einkommensverteilung zwischen Lohn für Männer und Frauen hatten wenig Übereinstimmungen, aber der Grad der Ungleichheit war bei beiden Geschlechtern der gleiche.
