The emergence and development of new high-tech regions have raised some fundamental questions in terms of economic geography and regional economic research. For instance, the traditional theories on location fail in many areas in the explanation and prognosis of regional technological development; indeed, there are also a number of unsolved methodological problems related to empirical measurement and assessment. It appears obvious that many of the new technology locations no longer follow the familiar patterns of growth and localisation. It is not rare for innovative clusters to emerge around peripheral, previously unknown locations. Silicon Glen is one of these. The article uses examples to sketch the genetic a nd programmatic structures of the Scottish high-tech region, making the leap from the detailed descriptions of actual components of growth to a theoretical observation of the location. It focuses in particul ar on the interactivity between growth impulses and development processes, various regional levels, different fields of strategy and reference points of economic and social policies.... view less
