The essay characterises, the approx. 2 million Roma living in the Carpathian-Pannonian Region according to demographic, ethnical and political-geographical aspects. The main tendencies of development of these processes in the present and the future are outlined. The aforementioned Roma question is one of the largest homeland policy problems in Romania, Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. The main efforts are targeted at complete emancipation and improvement of the education levels and the employment situation among the Roma. At the same time, there are voices on a local level that call for segregation and isolation of the Roma and even attempt to put these policies into practice. (author's abstract)... view less
