(Autorenreferat)... view less

Biotechnology is considered one of key technologies of the 21 st century because the progress made in the fields of gene technology and pharmaceutical therapy in the 90's triggered an enormous boom in this sector. However, biotechnological dynamics are not unfolding in a spatially homogenous fashion and more and more sites for specific types of expertise in this sector are establishing themselves throughout the world. Although Scotland has a peripheral location on the fringes of Europe, it has been emerging for years as one of the burgeoning bio-tech locations. This is due to a combination of different factors such as the enormous political, particularly financial support given it, the fact that it has historically been amassing local expertise in researching human medicine and agricultural engineering, or the attitude people have to biotechnology there. This also points the way to legislation that is relatively friendly to research work. After a phase of economic upturn primarily stimulated by investments in the infrastructure, Scotland is now applying a cluster-based network strategy in a bid to compensate for the still existing obstacles to growth (such as a lack of large-scale pharmaceutical companies).
