"Between 2004 and 2010 the population of German large cities grew by 1.6 percent while the number of inhabitants in the Federal Republic of Germany decreased by 0.95 percent. Which groups of the population contribute to this re-urbanization process? What city-specific conditions play a role? The population growth of large cities results mostly from internal migration rather than from international migration gains. The driving forces for growth are internal migration surpluses of young adults. The age group of 18 to under 25 registers above-average growth in large cities with a wide choice of educational offerings, whereas the age group of 25 to under 30 shows a stronger tendency to favour large cities of at least 500.000 inhabitants and a knowledge-based economic structure with a diversified job market."
