The central thesis here is the following: Neither the idea of total identity nor of radical difference is conducive to understanding nor communication among cultures, philosophies etc. The problem of identity and of difference has been a central question for philosophy. The paper proposes mediation between the two opposing camps by introducing the concept of a logic of overlaps beyond the logic of identity and difference. In order to substantiate this, the concept of an overlapping hermeneutics is introduced very much in the spirit of Wittgensteinian thesis of family resemblance and in the spirit of the polyperspectivism of the Indian school of Jaina philosophy. Another central concept, introduced here is the concept of an analogous hermeneutics, which essentializes neither identity nor difference, thus pleading for the vital role played by compromise beyond total consensus and radical dissens. Such a hermeneutics underlies the conviction that the desire to understand and the desire to be understood goes hand in hand and represent the two sides of the same hermeneutic coin. The question is not how to get rid of differences but how to deal with them. In the end a few tentative imperatives are formulated in the spirit of an intercultural oriented philosophy.... weniger
