With the arrival of „big data“ analysis, the traditional relationship between theoretical and empirical work in social science research has been put into question. While some are enthusiastic about new data-oriented research opportunities, others fear that the “end of theory” is near. The paper focuses on different aspects of this concern and proposes ways that theory can be used to enrich big data studies. Central to this are examples from agenda setting, social capital, and diffusion research. Interdisciplinary collaboration and systematic validation of big data methods seem to be key in advancing data-driven research, and their future role in communication’s research and teaching will likely depend on the potential for theoretical innovation within big data approaches.... view less
