'The emergence of the sovereign state of the Slovak Republic (official title: Slovenska Republika, SR, usually abbreviated to Slovensko) marked the beginning of an evolution that exhibits a number of contradictory trends. Since the present government under Vladimir Meciar came to power, pronounced anti-democratic and nationalist tendencies have been apparent in Slovak politics. These developments, which are the subject of the present report, are on the one hand reflected in the authoritarian style of government, while on the other hand they are mirrored in the new legislation. The report is based essentially on analyses by Slovak social scientists at the Academy of Sciences and at the Comenius University in Bratislava and on the Slovak daily press.'
