[Autorenreferat]... view less

"France’s economy has not been hit as hard as many other European countries
by the international financial crises, but its economic recovery is slower than in
Germany. For example, unemployment in France has continued to rise and is
expected to stay just below the 10 percent mark this year.
The last 30 years France’s public dept has increased steadily. This is mainly based
on unsolved structural problems of France’s economic policy and not due to
after-effects of the crises. Despite a limited room of political action, measures
including budget consolidation have become necessary lest France’s future economic
growth will be inhibited.
The French economic and social model is still heavily influenced by the notion
of a centralized state so that privatization and liberalization measures have not
yet led to an effective structural adjustment in the globalized market. Over the
last three decades the ratio of public spending has grown strongly from 45,6
percent (1980) to 56,6 percent (2011).
France, however, still is Europe’s second largest economy and is therefore characterized
by several industrial strengths: France possesses a very strong automotive
and aviation industry, holds the position of market leader in the nuclear
sector, and is well positioned in other structure-defining economic sectors. Yet
in the future France needs reforms, which include dept reduction, the consolidation
of its social system as well as cost reduction in government spending." [author's abstract]... view less
