"Due to demographic change, the question about the point in time at which academics decide to start a family has become an urgent one. In view of declining birth rates, which are often caused by the postponement of the decision to have a child, possibilities to make the so called 'rush hour of life' less of a rush are being debated. Thus, the time spent at university is increasingly recommended as an alternative period during which to have children - especially for women. However, what does having a family while still studying mean for men? The study presented in this article tackles this question from the perspective of gender studies. By analyzing interviews with studying fathers, it reconstructs the different paths that lead to fatherhood for students, and their meanings. For that purpose, three types of studying fathers are differentiated. The analysis focuses on the question of how far having a family during university studies bears emancipatory potential for new models of fatherhood." (author's abstract)... view less
