"Die französische Debatte um das Kopftuchverbot im öffentlichen Raum verweist auf den Bezug feministischer Aktivistinnen auf die Prinzipien des republikanischen Universalismus trotz ihrer konträren politischen Positionen. Dieser Bezug wird von postkolonialen Kritikerinnen radikal in Frage gestellt, die das gesetzliche Kopftuchverbot in der Tradition kolonialer Herrschaftsmuster sehen. Überlegenswert erscheint die Anregung, den republikanischen Laizismus als tatsächlich neutralen Raum zu verstehen, in dem Religionen als Stimmen der Zivilgesellschaft zum Ausdruck kommen, aber auch das Recht auf Nicht-Religiosität anerkannt wird."
