"Youth suffers from poverty and social exclusion particularly. The psychic effects are barely examined from the point of view of a 'psychology of poverty'. This paper focuses on the consequences of poverty and exclusion for the identity formation studied on the ground of an ethnographic study. The sample consists of social disintegrated youngsters who belong to a group hanging out on the street at the former West-Berlin central railway station 'Bahnhof Zoo'. The experience of social exclusion leads to damages of the individual world- and self-understanding. In contrast, the affiliation to the youth group enables a reconstitution of the damaged identity through subcultural recognition and status." (author's abstract)... view less
