"In the qualitative part of a study conducted by the Criminological Research Institute of Lower Saxony (KFN) and funded by the Ministry for Science and Culture of Lower Saxony more than 30 biographical narrative interviews have been carried out to date with gamers who call themselves addicted and score addicted according to the present and retrospective versions of screening instrument CSAS-II. Reconstructive analyses of the first interviews surprisingly revealed a consistent pattern of occupational semantics (work-related vocabulary and imagery) throughout some interviews. Initially, the article expatiates this semantic reference system on the empirical basis of the transcripts. The following interpretation in a first step stays on the level of the interviews, which contain self-reflective statements regarding video game dependency which the affected persons either regard as qualification for a job (normalization) or as disease (pathologisation). In a second step these normalizing or pathologising self-reflections are discussed in the light of sociological theories which are helpful for the understanding of work in post-modern societies: Baudrillard's 'principle of simulation', Foucaults 'disciplinary power' and Boltanski/Chiapellos 'new spirit of capitalism'."
