Zwischen den Kulturen: allgemeine und speziellere Anmerkungen zu einer qualitativen Komparatistik

Abstract

"Qualitative Vergleiche widmen sich der Rekonstruktion komplexer sozialer Konstellationen des Verhältnisses von gesellschaftlichen Bedingungen, sozialen Institutionen und Akteurshandeln. Sie gehen damit über die schlichte Gegenüberstellung nationalen oder kulturspezifischer sozialer Realitäten hinaus, wie sie sowohl quantifizierende Kulturvergleiche als auch öffentliche Diskurse prägen. Ausgehend von der Problematik der Fokussierung und isolierten Betrachtung von Nationalstaaten in kulturvergleichender Perspektive stellt der Beitrag konzeptionell und anhand der Präsentation ausgewählter Ergebnisse einer rekonstruktiv-empirischen Untersuchung die Identifikation von 'Grammatiken' sozialer Phänomene als besonderes Potenzial einer qualitativen Komparatistik heraus." "Qualitative comparisons aim to reconstruct complex social constellations considering the relation of societal conditions, social institutions and individual actions. Therewith they overcome simple confrontations of national or cultural phenomenon as they are presented in quantitative cross-cultural research as well as in public discourses. Based on the critique concerning the overemphasis of national states in comparative research the paper introduces conceptual basics of qualitative comparisons and presents selected findings of a qualitative comparative study. It is to be underlined that one specific benefit of qualitative comparisons lies within the identification of a 'grammar' of social phenomenon." (author's abstract)
