"Parents, kindergarten teachers and school teachers were asked, embedded in the interdisciplinary BiKS-3-8-study, about their school readiness criteria and their attitudes concerning who should decide on a child's school readiness and when. ata from standardized questionnaires and guided interviews showed that parents’ views differ in relation to their educational level and preferred school entry (i.e. as early or as late as possible or according to the official regulations). With respect to the school readiness criteria, however, differences between the groups - parents, kindergarten teachers and school teachers - are rather small. All groups name mainly children's social competences and their ability to learn. Pre-academic knowledge and skills, predictors of success in reading and mathematics during the first grades, are hardly considered." (author's abstract)... view less
