"The article is based on Pierre Bourdieu's theory of practice and applies his concept of 'symbolic violence' to discuss the power relations and male dominance in beauty practices. The findings are derived from qualitative research data, conducted through interviews, which show typical class and gender differences of beauty attitudes and beautification methods in contemporary Western societies. One surprising result of the empirical research is that the class differences within one gender category exceed the gender differences in some cases. However, the overall conclusion of the article points to persistent patriarchal power relations - that are represented and constituted in the process of beautification - and to the reconfiguration of symbolic violence since the Fordist era."
