(Autorenreferat)... view less

"This article examines the sociological dimension of the gerontological-geriatric concept of frailty. This concept is rooted in a biopsychosocial model of ageing. In addition to socio-structural factors, also micro-social behaviour patterns and implications of the frailty concept for society are discussed. Studies, which are referenced in this article, provide strong empirical evidence for the impact of social factors on processes of becoming frail. Frailty does not only imply physiological changes, but is closely connected to appropriate subjective coping mechanisms (role-making). However, the frailty concept still lacks an exhaustive socio-theoretical foundation." (author's abstract)... view less
