In recent decades change in agricultural structure has proved to be the most important
process in the transformation of the Kaiserstuhl cultural landscape. Characteristic for
the Kaiserstuhl is the transformation of agricultural enterprises from mixed farming
with arable land, vine and fruit cultivation, and modest livestock holding, to specialised
vineyards and fruit farms. This transformation is reflected in the landscape, as are the
measures of rationalisation and land consolidation necessary to ensure the maintenance
of agriculture and allow such specialisation. Nonetheless there are still today
remains of past forms of farming such as, for example, the still significant melange of
relatively small plots of land or narrow terraces that have not been modified. For the
preservation of competitive farming, processes of adjustment are unavoidable and they
will continue to result in the disappearance of traditional cultural landscape elements.
Amoltern and Königschaffhausen, that were incorporated into the town of Endingen am
Kaiserstuhl in the 1970s, are today still predominately rural districts both in terms of
their settlement structure and their land use. Agriculture, usually carried out as a secondary
occupation, continues to play an important role here. Despite differing service
provision and non-agricultural employment opportunities, neither location has been
affected by appreciable outwards migration. There are planned areas for new building
and vacancy rates in the town centres are unappreciable. Although the settlements are
not part of suburban space they are able to profit from employment opportunities in the
smaller and medium-sized centres in the surrounding area and have relatively good
development chances.... view less
