Navigating the politics of fieldwork using institutional ethnography: strategies for practice

Abstract

"Gegenstand dieses Artikels ist die Diskussion und Analyse der Charakteristika und Spannungen, die aus der Feldarbeit in zwei Projekten resultierten, in denen die institutionelle Ethnografie zum Einsatz kam. Das erste Projekt befasste sich mit der Organisation des kanadischen Einwanderungssystems und den obligatorischen HIV-Tests für Immigrant/ innen, das zweite untersuchte die Arbeit von Pflegekräften in ausgewählten kanadischen Krankenhäusern. Die Autoren behaupten, dass mit der bewussten Übernahme eines Standpunktes aufseiten einer spezifischen Gruppe (Immigrant /innen mit HIV bzw. Pflegekräften) - d.h., wenn Forschung von deren Erfahrungswissen und Verortung in der jeweiligen Lebenswelt ausgeht - Herausforderungen einhergehen, mit denen Forschende sich befassen und die sie bearbeiten müssen. Ausgehend von Beispielen aus unserer Feldforschung untersuchen die Autoren solche Herausforderungen und begründen, wie sie angesichts der Probleme, vor denen sie standen, zu Forschungsentscheidungen gekommen sind. Sie wollen mit diesem Beitrag in die institutionelle Ethnografie einführen und Forschenden, die sie als kritische sozialwissenschaftliche Untersuchungsstrategie nutzen wollen, Praxishilfen geben." "Discussion and analysis of characteristics and tensions associated with fieldwork in two projects using institutional ethnography is the focus of this article. Examined in comparison with each other, the first exemplar explores the organization of the Canadian immigration system and the mandatory medical screening for the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) of immigrants within this. The second exemplar looks at how nurses' work in a selection of Canadian hospitals is organized. The argument made is that the politics of deliberately maintaining a standpoint on the side of a set of people (immigrants with HIV and nurses) - where inquiry begins from the experiential knowledge and concerns with the world of these constituents - gives rise to challenges to which the researcher must contend and adapt. Mobilizing examples from the fieldwork, the authors explore several such challenges and explain the research decisions they made in the face of these. In this article, they present insights and practical strategies for researchers who are preparing to use institutional ethnography as a strategy for critical social inquiry." (author's abstract)
