Cultural capitalism in the web 2.0: on the analysis of segmentation, intersection and negotiation processes in the social worlds of the internet

"The article intends to develop an appropriate empirical instrument for the analysis of increasing intersections of culture and capitalism in the web 2.0. It takes up the theory of social worlds by Anselm L. Strauss in order to examine processes of segmentation, intersection and negotiation between cultural and economical practices. The focus is on the ways, the structural contradictions of 'cultural capitalism' (Rifkin) become manifest in the internet. In theoretical perspective, four models relating culturally resp. economically oriented social worlds are distinguishable: a homology-, a fragmentation-, a coupling-as well as a negotiation-thesis. They all give important insights to social changes in the age of web 2.0 as becomes apparent by looking at the social worlds of social networking, of new forms of prosumtion, of social production and finally of file sharing networks, which spread on the internet. It remains unanswered yet, which one of the four theses concerning the dynamic processes in web 2.0 is most plausible, if we ask for the general tendencies in cultural capitalism. But given the increasing interdependencies of culture and capitalism the relative marginal role of (political) arenas for negotiating conflicts in the digital space of communication is irritating."
