German technical associations between science, industry, and the state, 1860-1914

Abstract

Der Verfasser stellt zunächst ein analytisches Schema für die Untersuchung technischer Berufsverbände vor. Interessen und Aktivitäten der Verbände werden vier Feldern zugeordnet: Berufsinteressen, wirtschaftliche Interessen, technische Standardisierung, Produktion und Verbreitung von Wissen. Zwei dieser Felder werden im Detail behandelt. Hierbei geht es zum einen um das Engagement der Berufsverbände auf dem Gebiet der Sicherheitskontrolle, der Materialprüfung und der Standardisierung. Zum anderen wird nach der Rolle der Verbände bei der Forschungsförderung gefragt. Hier übten die Verbände einen Einfluß über die Formulierung von Problemstellungen und die Organisation von Forschung aus. (ICHÜbers)

'The first section provides an analytical scheme for the study of technical associations. Their interests and activities are classified according to four major areas: professional interests; economic interests; regulation of technical standards; production and diffusion of knowledge. Sections 2 and 3 analyse in more detail two of these areas. 'Regulation of technical standards' deals with the technical associations as they were involved in matters of safety control, testing of materials, and standardization. 'Promotion of research' considers the technical associations as they took part in the production of knowledge. They did so by formulating problems and by organizing research.' (author's abstract)
