(Autorenreferat)... view less

The paper discusses the situation and the development perspectives of low-skilled industrial work in Germany. Low-skilled industrial work describes activities that are of low complexity, make few demands on the employees and its performance require only limited qualification efforts. According to the mainstream research, this type of work is significantly losing ground in industrial societies. Germany is normally regarded as a country with a prevailing high-skilled work-force. The paper critically reconsiders this mainstream perspective. The argument is that in specific industrial sectors and fields low-skilled industrial work shows a re-markable stability. In particular, the contribution will focus on low-skilled work in the German food industry. Low-skilled work is a key element in the industrial production of food. Many unskilled and semiskilled workers are employed in the tasks of manufacturing and packaging. Though the job requirements are at a low level, the complexity of work is increasing. But at the same time there are also findings that suggest a growing importance of atypical employment in the food industry. The paper is based on the results of an ongoing project funded by the German Research Foundation." (author's abstract)... view less
