(Autorenreferat)... view less

"This paper deals with the idea of a social market economy and the norm of social justice from a historical point of view. A comparison of the concepts of ordo-liberalism on the one hand and economic and social policy in Germany after the Second World War on the other hand shows that the implementation of the main ethical postulates of the founders of ordo-liberalism has been carried out by means and institutions, which are quite different from the instruments proposed e Eucken, Röpke, Rüstow, and Müller-Armack. Nevertheless, it can be substantiated that most of the ethical foundations of ordo-liberalism had a very decisive influence on economic and social policy in Germany after 1945. Subsequently, the paper investigates the limitations of this political and economic approach, especially with regard to the Problem of path dependence, and analyzes some possibilities to achieve the ethical postulates of the founders of ordo-liberalism under the economic conditions of our time."
