'The importance of kinship networks has been ignored by social and demographic historians at their peril. Through case studies of rural Brittany and urban Nanterre, the paper traces the development of kin relationships in three periods: the traditional wider family, the high-industrial restricted family and the reactivation of kinship networks in recent years. Its anthropological methodology demonstrates how one can build upon quantitative foundations and gain qualitative insights into the societal meanings of population patterns.'
