Unter Anwendung des poetischen Bildes des wachsenden Baumes wird in dem Beitrag die alte Tradition des Lesens in Schweden untersucht. Durch die Betonung des religiösen Ursprungs und der religiösen Praxis des Lesens wird die falsche Auffassung korrigiert, daß sich der Alphabetismus nur mit der industriellen Revolution entwickelt hat. Obwohl eine Beziehung zu der reichhaltigen quantitativen Umea-Datenbasis hergestellt wird, wird mit dem Text ein wichtiger Schritt in Richtung auf die Untersuchung der Qualität der Leseerfahrung durch hohe Aufmerksamkeit im Hinblick auf die Volkskultur und den Inhalt der Bücher gemacht.
