"This paper deals with the compatibility of work and family for academic women who return to work within a one-year period after birth of their child. To understand the interdependency between employment and family on theoretical grounds, the term 'strategy' should be regarded as being crucially relevant. In this context, the conceptual considerations of Pierre Bourdieu are helpful. He uses the mentioned term to show how actions of individuals are regulated without following rules. People do not follow rules, but pursue strategies to realize their interests. A remarkable connectedness between the implemented compatibility strategies of women and their social background can be determined. Differences become manifest with regard to the extent and comprehensiveness of work, the division of family work between the care-taking couple and the handling of internal crisis resulting out of the compatibility interest of work and family."
