'The breakdown of the Berlin Wall and the political transition of East Germany after 1989 raised the question, whether the former socialist elite would, at least partly, be successful in keeping their influential positions. Based on considerations about the differentiation of occupational careers in the GDR, the article explores the fate of persons belonging to two different groups within the East German upper service class: professionals and managers (i.e. administrative personnel). Data from the East German Life History Study allow us to trace the periods of unemployment and self-employment as well as upward and downward moves in the hierarchy of occupational status positions of 209 women and men from 1989 until 1996. As expected, former managers faced much greater risks of occupational discontinuity and downward mobility than former professionals. Further analyses show that this difference is caused mainly by the higher employment risks of female managers, and by the low career prospects for highly qualified East German women outside of the public sector.'
