On May 20th, state elections in Sarawak, East Malaysia, were held. As expected, the ruling coalition was able to win a large majority of seats (62 out of 71) in the state parliament DUN (Dewan Undangan Negeri). Nevertheless, the vote was interpreted as a victory for the opposition, especially for the Democratic Action Party (DAP). Some observers even described the polls as a fundamental restructuring of the political landscape. For the first time, the opposition was united and particularly in urban areas the Barisan Nasional was punished. Am 20. Mai 2006 fandenWahlen im Bundesstaat Sarawak (Ostmalaysia) statt. Wie erwartet konnte die regierende Koalition die große Mehrheit der Parlamentsmandate gewinnen (62 von 71 Sitzen im DUN, Dewan Undangan Negeri); trotzdem wurden die Wahlen als großer Erfolg der Opposition, insbesondere der chinesischen Democratic Action Party (DAP), gewertet. Einige Beobachter sprachen sogar von fundamentalen Veränderungen in der ostmalaysischen Parteienlandschaft. Erstmals trat die Opposition weitgehend geeint auf, und vor allem in den urbanen Zentren wurde die regierende Barisan Nasional von den Wählern abgestraft.
