(Autorenreferat)... view less

"The article's point of departure is the Observation that processes of competence acquisition have rarely or rather indirectly been investigated so far (not only by quantitative, but also by qualitative studies). It sets out a sociological understanding of competence and of the development of competences that differs from several other categories in the conceptual surroundings of 'learning'. With this notion in mind, two main qualitative research approaches - one focussing on biographical learning and the other on practices of learning - are gauged with respect to their contributions and limitations. Alternatively, the significance of learning in careers is pointed out. It is argued that the sociological concept of careers serves to grasp the interrelations between individual competence development and the social structures of a learning community. This is demonstrated by taking youth scenes as an example and drawing on current research on the gothic scene and the graffiti scene. A case study which is based on an autobiographical narrative interview traces some of the respective processes empirically and shows some advantages and disadvantages of biographical research approaches for the investigation of competence development. Finally, a methodical strategy is presented that is suitable for the investigation of competence development in scenes." (author's abstract)... view less
