%X Six months have passed since the Thai military has ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and
taken over power. The situation in the country has not eased since then. The military-installed
government has proven to be unable to restore peace in the south and to bring the economy back
on track. It faced severe problems in providing evidence on Thaksin’s alleged corruption. Rumours
about the rulers’ intention to reduce the scope of public participation perpetuated the public’s
growing feeling of mistrust. With a down-spiralling economy and a security situation worse than
before the coup uncertainty took hold of the Thai citizens and pressed on the government to
deliver its ambitious promises timely.
