Youth in society: why additive interdisciplinarity cannot replace a theoretical foundation of youth research

"In Germany youth research is an established interdisciplinary field in which often allocation to a certain discipline is difficult and disciplinary differences are hard to distinguish. This article argues that the seemingly unproblematic theme-based linking of heterogeneous theories and methods of scientific research needs to be characterized as an additive interdisciplinary and that such an interdisciplinary cannot replace a theory-based relationship between heterogeneous disciplinary perspectives. The article further critically deals with the proposal that value free empirical youth research should be distinguished from normative youth research. Against this background the aspects of a concept of youth based on social theory are outlined with the intent to stimulate discussion on the basic interdisciplinary premises relating to youth research."
