"This article is due to examine two forms of school absenteeism: occasional and heavy truancy. First, theoretical and empirical research is sketched in order to derive possible reasons for school absent behaviour of pupils. This is done by means of two main concepts: the first focussing on individual, the second on institutional factors. The article provides empirical evidence of the differences between occasional and heavy truancy related to the explanatory value of the existing theoretical concepts. The conclusion is that a combined perspective on truancy, considering both the individual and the institutional factors, is the best available strategy to deal with truancy as a phenomenon with multiple characteristics."
