"Is a golf tournament more attractive with or without Tiger Woods? When contest organizers want to maximize contest outcomes, should they exclude the oddson favourite, the bidder with the highest valuation for the prize, in order to attract higher bidding from the fellow players? Experiments show that regret aversion makes high performers overbid by such a large amount that this overcompensates lacking bids from fellow bidders. Interestingly, overbidding occurs especially when there is a considerable gap between the bidder with the highest and the second highest valuation."[author´s abstract]... view less
